How Ohio Income Tax Works
Ohio moved to a near-flat tax: income up to $26,050 is taxed at 0% — a “zero bracket” — and everything above that is taxed at a flat 2.75%. Before the rate applies, you subtract Ohio personal exemptions from your income.
- Zero bracket: $26,050. If your Ohio taxable income is $26,050 or less, you owe $0 in state income tax.
- Flat 2.75% above the zero bracket. Every dollar of taxable income over $26,050 is taxed at 2.75%.
- Personal exemptions. Ohio gives a personal exemption per taxpayer and dependent — $2,400 for single filers at lower incomes, phasing down at higher incomes. This calculator uses a simplified $2,400 per person.
- Business income is separate. Ohio taxes business income at a flat 3% with the first $250,000 exempt.
- Municipal taxes are extra. More than 200 Ohio cities levy their own local income tax (commonly 1–2.5%), not modeled here.
Ohio taxable income = gross income − personal exemptions
If taxable income ≤ $26,050 → tax = $0
Otherwise: tax = $332 + 2.75% × (taxable income − $26,050)
If taxable income ≤ $26,050 → tax = $0
Otherwise: tax = $332 + 2.75% × (taxable income − $26,050)
Worked Example: Single, $80,000 Gross Income
| Calculation | Amount | |
|---|---|---|
| Personal exemption (single) | $2,400 | |
| Ohio taxable income | $80,000 − $2,400 | $77,600 |
| OH state tax | $332 + 2.75% × ($77,600 − $26,050) | $1,749.63 |
| Effective rate | $1,749.63 ÷ $80,000 | 2.19% |
