Rising Sign Calculator

Your sun sign comes from your birthday. Your rising sign — your ascendant — comes from the exact minute you were born. It is the sign that shapes first impressions, your outward style, and the way you walk into any new situation. Enter your birth date, birth time, and time zone to find yours.

Find Your Rising Sign

The rising sign changes about every two hours, so the time matters more than anything else. A birth certificate time is ideal.

Most US births from mid-March to early November fall in daylight saving time. If you were born in winter, you can usually leave this unchecked.

How the Rising Sign Works

The ascendant is the point where the zodiac crosses the eastern horizon at the moment of birth. Because the Earth rotates once a day, that point sweeps through all twelve signs in about 24 hours — roughly one sign every two hours. Two people born on the same day, a few hours apart, can have the same sun sign and completely different rising signs.

Your birth moment + time zone + latitude → local sidereal time → the zodiac degree on the eastern horizon = your ascendant
  • It is your outward style: astrologers treat the rising sign as the “mask” or front door of the chart — the version of you strangers meet first, before they get to know your sun sign core.
  • It needs a clock time: your sun sign needs only a date, and your moon sign can be estimated from a date, but the ascendant is gone without a birth time. A time that is off by an hour can move the result by a full sign.
  • Sunrise is the famous case: someone born right at sunrise nearly always has a rising sign equal to their sun sign, because the sun itself is sitting on the eastern horizon.
  • Latitude matters: at far northern latitudes the signs rise at uneven speeds, so the same birth time can produce a different ascendant in Alaska than in Florida. This calculator uses a regional latitude rather than pretending one size fits all.

Frequently Asked Questions

The rising sign, or ascendant, is the zodiac sign that was coming up over the eastern horizon at the exact moment and place of your birth. In astrology it describes your outward personality: first impressions, personal style, and your default approach to new people and situations.

Because the ascendant moves through all twelve signs in about 24 hours — one sign roughly every two hours, and about one degree every four minutes. A birth time that is off by an hour can shift the result noticeably, and near a sign changeover it can change the sign itself. Your sun sign, by contrast, only needs your birth date.

It uses a simplified sidereal-time model: it works from your time zone meridian and a regional latitude instead of your exact birthplace longitude and latitude. For most US births that lands on the correct sign, but if your result sits within a few degrees of a sign boundary, your true ascendant may be the neighboring sign. A full birth chart calculation with exact coordinates is the way to settle a close call.

Check your birth certificate first — most US certificates record the time. Hospital records and family baby books are the next best sources. If the time is truly lost, some astrologers use your sun sign as a rough stand-in for the rising sign (called a solar chart), but treat that as a fun approximation, not a real ascendant.
Disclaimer: This calculator is for entertainment. It uses a simplified astronomical model (time zone meridian plus regional latitude, standard sidereal-time approximation), so results can be off by one sign near sign changeovers or for births far from their time zone meridian. Astrology is a belief tradition, not a science, and nothing here should guide medical, financial, or relationship decisions.
