Search results size (360 px wide)
Sidebar / Up next size (168 px wide) — can you still read the text?
Mobile feed size (420 px wide)
The sidebar preview is the honesty test: if your words are unreadable at 168 px, most viewers will never read them — shorten the text or make it bigger.
What Makes a YouTube Thumbnail Pass the Check?
YouTube shows your thumbnail far smaller than the file you upload. In search it renders around 360 px wide, in the Up Next sidebar about 168 px, and even on a phone it is a few inches across. A thumbnail that looks great full-screen can turn into mush at real sizes — which is why checking the small previews matters more than admiring the big one.
- Resolution: upload 1280 × 720 px (or larger, same ratio). Smaller sources look soft everywhere, especially on TVs.
- Aspect ratio: exactly 16:9. Anything else gets cropped or black bars, and your composition breaks.
- File size: under 2 MB or YouTube rejects the upload. JPG usually lands well under this.
- Text: 3–4 huge words maximum. If the sidebar preview above is unreadable, the text is too small or too long.
- Contrast: one bright focal subject against a darker or simpler background survives shrinking best.
