Wedding Cake Calculator (2026)

How much wedding cake do you actually need? Enter your guest count and this calculator gives you the servings, a recommended tier combination, and a realistic buttercream or fondant cost range.

Calculate Your Wedding Cake

The saved top tier is the smallest tier (6-inch, 12 servings) and is not counted toward feeding guests.

Cost is a planning range for a standard custom design and excludes delivery, setup, cake stand rental, and any venue cake-cutting fee ($1–$5 per slice at many venues). Elaborate fondant designs with sugar flowers can run $8–$15 per serving.

How the Calculator Works

Wedding servings are smaller than party slices: a wedding slice is 1 inch by 2 inches, cut from a 4-inch-tall tier. That is why the serving counts below are higher than the party-serving numbers on a standard cake pan chart.

Servings needed = guests × servings per guest
Top tier saved = 12 servings (6-inch tier) if keeping the anniversary tier
Cake servings to order = servings needed + top tier saved
Cost range = servings needed × price per serving

Wilton Wedding Serving Chart (Round Tiers, 4 Inches Tall)

Tier diameter Wedding servings Good for
6-inch round 12 Small cutting cake / top tier
8-inch round 24 Up to 24 guests
10-inch round 38 Up to 38 guests
12-inch round 56 Up to 56 guests
14-inch round 78 Up to 78 guests
16-inch round 100 Up to 100 guests

Serving counts follow the Wilton chart for 4-inch-tall round cakes cut into 1-inch by 2-inch wedding slices. Bakers vary slightly, so confirm the final count with your baker.

Worked Example: 120 Guests, Buttercream, No Anniversary Tier

Calculation Result
Servings needed 120 guests × 1 serving 120 servings
Tier combination 16-inch (100) + 8-inch (24), largest first 124 servings
Extra servings 124 − 120 4 servings
Buttercream cost 120 × $4 to $7 $480 – $840
Fondant cost (for comparison) 120 × $6 to $10 $720 – $1,200

With the anniversary tier saved, the same 120 guests need a cake of 132 servings (120 + 12), and the recommended combination becomes 16-inch + 10-inch (138 servings).

Frequently Asked Questions

Plan on one wedding serving per guest. A wedding serving is a 1-inch by 2-inch slice from a 4-inch-tall tier, so it is smaller than a birthday-party slice. If many guests are children or you expect a lot of skips, 0.75 servings per guest is a safe planning figure.

A wedding serving (1 by 2 inches) is roughly half the size of a party serving (about 2 by 2 inches). A 12-inch round tier therefore yields about 56 wedding servings but only around 24 to 30 party servings. Always confirm which serving size your baker quotes.

It is a lovely tradition, but the saved tier is not served on the day, so your cake must be one tier bigger than your guest count requires. This calculator adds the 12 servings of a 6-inch top tier to your order when you choose that option. Many couples now order a fresh anniversary cake instead.

Most US couples pay $3 to $8 per slice for a standard custom cake. Basic buttercream averages about $4 per slice and fondant about $5 to $6; elaborate designs with sugar flowers reach $8 to $15 per slice. The Knot reports a national average cake cost of about $540.

Order a smaller tiered display cake for cutting and photos, and serve sheet cake from the kitchen for the rest of your guests. Sheet cake costs far less per serving and nobody can tell the difference once it is plated.

Possibly. Many venues and caterers charge $1 to $5 per slice to cut, plate, and serve a cake they did not bake. Ask your venue directly before finalizing the cake budget, since the fee can add hundreds of dollars on a large guest list.
