Image Optimizer for Etsy — Check If Your Product Photo Is Good Enough

Upload a product photo and get an instant Etsy readiness check: resolution, aspect ratio, background, brightness, sharpness, and signs of an over-edited or artificial look. Then optimize the file to the right size — entirely in your browser.

Step 1: Etsy Photo Check

Drag and drop your product photo here, or click to choose a file
Checking one photo? Just add it. If you add several, the check runs on the first photo and the optimizer in Step 2 processes them all. Everything happens on your device — nothing is uploaded.

Your product photo preview

Before you list, ask yourself three questions

  • Does the photo show the true colors of the item?
  • Does it make the item look bigger than it is?
  • Would a buyer feel the photo matches the real product when it arrives?

This checker flags signs of an over-edited or artificial look — extreme saturation, heavy smoothing, weak detail. It cannot prove how an image was made, and no tool can. What matters is honesty: misleading photos are the top cause of Etsy returns and one-star reviews, so if any answer above is “not quite”, reshoot or soften the edit.

How the check works: your photo is measured locally with your browser’s canvas — pixel size, shape, border background, average brightness, color saturation, and edge detail. The thresholds follow Etsy’s own guidance below.

Want a 10/10 Image? Copy This Prompt

If your photo failed the check — or you are creating a product image with an AI image generator — use this prompt. Every line in it fixes one of the mistakes the checker flags above: too-small size, wrong shape, a dark or busy background, dull or washed-out light, oversaturated colors, and the over-smoothed, artificial look that makes buyers distrust a listing.

Paste the finished prompt into your image generator — ChatGPT Images, Midjourney, Ideogram, Leonardo, or whichever you use. If your generator has a negative-prompt field, the last line goes there.

Then run the generated image through Step 1 above — a photo made with a 10/10 prompt should score 85 or higher.

Step 2: Optimize It

80 to 85 is the sweet spot for photos. PNG output ignores this setting because PNG is lossless.

2,700 px wide matches Etsy’s recommended 2,700 by 2,025 listing size. Images wider than this are scaled down. Set 0 or leave empty to keep the original size. Images are never enlarged.

WebP is the best default for the web. JPEG cannot store transparency, so transparent images converted to JPEG get a white background.

Add your photos in Step 1 above — the optimized versions appear here. Privacy: every image is processed locally in your browser using your own device. No file is uploaded, stored, or shared anywhere.

What Etsy Wants From a Product Photo

Etsy search is a wall of photos, and your first image does almost all of the selling before a buyer reads a single word. Etsy publishes clear guidance on what a listing photo should be — this checker is built directly on it.

  • Size for zoom: Etsy recommends that the shortest side of a listing image be 2,000 pixels or more. Below that, the zoom tool buyers rely on stops working properly, and hesitant shoppers move on.
  • Shape for search: listing images display in a 4:3 frame in search results. A 2,700 by 2,025 pixel image fills that frame exactly, with nothing important cropped away.
  • The first photo decides the click: buyers scroll fast. A bright, clean, clearly readable main photo earns the click; the lifestyle and detail shots behind it close the sale.
  • Honest color sells twice: accurate color and true scale do not just look professional — they prevent the returns and disappointed reviews that follow when a product looks different in person.
  • Reasonable file weight: very large files slow your listing page down, especially on mobile. Optimizing a checked photo to a sensible size keeps the quality while the page stays fast.
Etsy-ready target: 2,700 × 2,025 px (4:3), shortest side at least 2,000 px, clean light background on the main photo, true colors, optimized file size.

Which Format Should You Choose?

Format Compression Transparency Best use
WebP Lossy and lossless Yes Default for web photos and graphics — smallest files, universal browser support
JPEG Lossy No Photos when maximum compatibility matters, such as email and older software
PNG Lossless Yes Logos, icons, screenshots, and graphics with sharp edges or transparency

Frequently Asked Questions

Aim for 2,700 by 2,025 pixels. Etsy recommends the shortest side be at least 2,000 pixels so the zoom feature works, and listing photos display in a 4:3 frame in search, which 2,700 by 2,025 fills exactly. Bigger originals are fine — use Step 2 to scale and optimize them.

Not for certain — no tool can prove how an image was made. The checker flags the visible signs of an over-processed look: extreme color saturation, over-smoothed detail, and unnatural softness. Those signs are what buyers react to, and they are what make a real product photo look artificial or misleading.

Because mismatched expectations drive returns, refund requests, and poor reviews. If the color, size, or finish in the photo differs from the item that arrives, buyers feel misled — and Etsy’s review system makes sure future buyers hear about it. True colors and honest scale protect your shop’s rating.

No. The check and the optimizer both run entirely in your browser using the canvas built into your device. Your files are never uploaded, stored, or transmitted anywhere, which also makes the tool safe for unreleased products.

Fix the failed item first: reshoot or re-export at 2,000 pixels or more on the shortest side, use a plain light background for the main photo, and ease off saturation and smoothing filters. If the file is simply too heavy, run it through Step 2. Short on time? The image creation service above can produce listing-ready photos for you.
Disclaimer: The Etsy Photo Check uses general image heuristics based on Etsy’s published photo guidance. It flags signs of an over-edited or artificial look but cannot prove how any image was created, and passing the check does not guarantee Etsy approval, search placement, or sales.
